Think of all the pomp and ceremony that goes into an event in the life of the Queen of England. Do you remember the royal wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana? Do you remember when their two sons were born? Great honor and homage is paid to them. There are lots of fancy expensive clothes and hats. There are celebrations and great gatherings of important people. Only the best of the best will do. Limousines or fancy horse drawn carriages are needed to transport them.
Think of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. He lived in the glory and splendor of heaven. The angels are in constant worship and adoration of Him. People were waiting on His coming to earth. They thought He would come with great pomp and ceremony. They were sure He would come as a great warrior to take over the Roman Empire and the world as it was then. If anyone deserved honor, homage, fancy and expensive clothes, important people, ceremonies and celebrations, and fancy transportation it would be Him... Messiah. He was coming to save the world.
Every year at this time, I am struck with the whole of what He did for me. I am a sinner. I deserve death and eternal damnation. I am so undeserving. Yet, this King of Kings stepped out of all that glory of heaven with His Father and came to Earth in human form. He did not come as that mighty warrior riding a horse of war. He came as a helpless little infant. Think of someone around you that has a new baby. They are totally dependent on someone else for everything. To be fed and clothed. To have their diaper changed. Angels did come and announce His birth, but not to all the "important" people, but to a bunch of shepherds on a hill. His mother did not get to ride in a limo or have a fancy carriage pulled by gorgeous horses. No, big and pregnant ready to give birth at any time, she rode many miles on a donkey. Then when they got to their destination, there was not a fancy hotel or palace for them. They were turned away even from a humble inn and sent to a barn where animals lived. His first crib was not a fancy expensive one all decorated with matching linens. It was a feed box for animals. He was wrapped in simple cloth. Oh, how humble of a beginning our Savior had. Why did He do this? Because even though I am a sinner, He loved me. Yes, He loved ME, Marci, enough to come down in this most humble of forms. It did not even stop there. He came to die in my place. He gave His life on that cross so that I would have a way to come to Him and to spend eternity with Him.
I love the song by Casting Crowns called While You Were Sleeping. It is the first song on my music on this blog. Listen to the words, or turn it off and watch the video below. Is He going to find you sleeping? Or will He find you about His business? Here are the lyrics.
"While You Were Sleeping"
Oh little town of Bethlehem
Looks like another silent night
Above your deep and dreamless sleep
A giant star lights up the sky
And while you're lying in the dark
There shines an everlasting light
For the King has left His throne
And is sleeping in a manger tonight
Oh Bethlehem, what you have missed while you were sleeping
For God became a man
And stepped into your world today
Oh Bethlehem, you will go down in history
As a city with no room for its King
While you were sleeping
While you were sleeping
Oh little town of Jerusalem
Looks like another silent night
The Father gave His only Son
The Way, the Truth, the Life had come
But there was no room for Him in the world He came to save
Jerusalem, what you have missed while you were sleeping
The Savior of the world is dying on your cross today
Jerusalem, you will go down in history
As a city with no room for its King
While you were sleeping
While you were sleeping
United States of America
Looks like another silent night
As we're sung to sleep by philosophies
That save the trees and kill the children
And while we're lying in the dark
There's a shout heard 'cross the eastern sky
For the Bridegroom has returned
And has carried His bride away in the night
America, what will we miss while we are sleeping
Will Jesus come again
And leave us slumbering where we lay
America, will we go down in history
As a nation with no room for its King
Will we be sleeping
Will we be sleeping
United States of America
Looks like another silent night
