Every Day Miracles

Some people think that I am weird because I get so into my "Georges"(I name all of my caterpillars George - it helps me to remember their name.). I let them think that and it honestly does not bother me. To me each George I get and watch is one of the every day miracles that God has placed around us. Anyone who watches the life cycle of a butterfly can not help but see God's miracle, if they truly look at what is happening.

Most of my George's end up as Monarch Butterflies. Some butterfly lays her eggs on a milkweed plant. I have never seen the eggs, so I have not seen that stage of their life. The eggs hatch and these wee tiny caterpillars are born. They instinctively know to start eating. That is what life is about for them. They eat and eat and eat. It is amazing how many leaves they will go through and how quickly they grow. Then they go and find some place to attach themselves so that they can hang in a "J" shape. How do each one of those caterpillars know it is a "J" they are supposed to hang like. I bet if they tried, they could get an "S" shape or a "C" shape. How about a lower case "l". That would be the easiest, but no they all hang in a "J" shape. Then when they are CERTAIN that I am not looking and will not be around for awhile, they form their chrysalis. I do hope to catch them in the act one day, but so far they have all out smarted me. Think about the chrysalis... Could you make one? What did they make it out of? It has little markings on it that look like real gold. Click on the picture below to make it larger and you will see the gold on the chrysalis. This is my current oldest George. I was looking for him among the leaves and couldn't find him. So, I looked at the top of the jar and there he was.

The chrysalis is so small, I wonder how George got into it. I wonder if he struggles like I have seen some people trying to put on a tight pair of pants. In a very short time (I think a week or less) you start to see the chrysalis be less green and more clear. Then one day you will see Monarch wings all folded up inside of it. Going in the caterpillar is striped green, black, yellow and white. When it emerges as a butterfly it is black and orange and white. HOW DID THAT HAPPEN? It is a miracle!!!! How else can you describe it? I actually feel a thrill at the awesomeness of God each time I witness this!!!

Wee George has been eating a bunch and he has grown. You can see my thumb in the picture below.

While I was taking pictures of Wee George I spied an even smaller one. It must have been microscopic when it came in.

I got some really good pictures last year of the clear chrysalis and George in all his beauty. So here is one of last year's Georges. See the "J" shape?

These next 2 show the Monarch wings in the chrysalis. Click on them to see the larger version. You can also see the gold that is on the outside of the chrysalis. What is it made of? Why is it shiny? How come each chrysalis has it?

Here is George the Butterfly!!! One of God's every day miracles that He put here to show his eternal power and Godhead.

Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Rom 1:19-20

What are some other every day miracles? Share yours!!

I can't wait to show Mason, Molly and Madelyn your pictures. They LOVE butterflies and bugs. I was looking at our garden today just marveling at the way God puts together every leaf, flower, vegetable. There is such beauty all around us!

Yes, Marci, they are definitely miracles! The process is amazing (of course the process of life-any life-is amazing) and what I really love is how the chrysallis looks like a jewel. I am not a jewelry person, but I would like to have a "chrysallis" to hang on a necklace-I think it would be so pretty and would be such a nice reminder on how our Christian walk is much like the birth of a butterfly.

A few years ago my daughter planted some milkweed and checked it every day after it grew to see if she could find the Monarch eggs. She came in the house one day yelling, "There's eggs on the milkweed!" She had gotten a little butterfly cage from her grandparents and so she was able to put the caterpillers in there with leaves to eat and watch the whole process. We finally got to see one of them make the chrysallis and it happens FAST!
Sorry to go on so long, I get excited about God's miracles too. :)
