Thursday Product Highlight

On Thursdays I plan on highlighting a product that we carry in the General Store. This will give people a chance to hear about why we chose to carry that product. I may do other regular posts on that day as well.

Today, I want to talk about Berkey Water Filters®. When our family moved into our last home, the water was horrible. The well was not very deep and we were in a sort of half bowl type hollow with farm fields all above us. They sprayed these fields heavily. We did not want to buy water. We studied several different water systems and chose a RO or reverse osmosis. This did very well for us, but the one set of filters had to be changed every 6 months and the other set every year. It was expensive to replace these. It also took up your kitchen faucet. We would run it all night and get 3 gallons of water. If you use that water for drinking and cooking, 3 gallons does not go far. We were having to run it almost every night. Then we moved to this house and the water was a little better, but we still wanted it filtered. We used the RO system we had until a couple of years ago. The last time I called to order filters, they no longer made them, but one guy had a few left he would sell and the price was higher. We decided to look around. After hearing someones testimony about the Berkey® (they had high farm chemicals in their water and tested before and after the Berkey® and were amazed) we decided to give it a try. We bought the Berkey Light® which you see below. There is an actual light available for the base, but we had no reason for the extra light and bought it without. Many people use it as a night light in their kitchen.

The Berkey® works on a gravity flow system. You fill the top half with your water, and the water goes through the 2 black berkey filters and fills the bottom chamber which hold 2.5 gallons. The 2 Black Berkey filter elements, have the ability to reduce lead, mercury, aluminum, nitrates, nitrites, MTBE, 2-4-D, and much more. There is a spigot on the bottom portion to get the water out. You can produce up to 24 gallons of fresh drinking water per day. They actually encourage you to test it every so often with food coloring. The picture below shows the red colored water in the top portion and the clear sparkling water that comes through. It filters water until it is 99.9% pure. The filters are washable as well. Every once in awhile if it starts to run slow, let the top part empty out and then remove the filters and use a green Scotch Bright pad to wipe them off. Re-prime them and replace.

It is very handy because it uses no electricity you can take it with you anywhere and it comes in many different sizes and styles. In this picture below you see the sport water bottle that comes with the Berkey® filter. You can take it with you anywhere. Weighing only 5.5 ounces you can bring your own hand held water purifier with you when you travel. The Sport Berkey® is the ideal personal protection traveling companion. The bottle's filter removes and/or dramatically reduces a vast array of health-threatening contaminants from questionable sources of water, such as lakes and streams, stagnant ponds and domestic water supplies.

There are several sizes of the Stainless Steel model.

Berkey Filters® are the ultimate in water purification and the ideal personal protection and traveling companions. Used worldwide for normal, hostile and emergency environments to provide the purest, sparkling clean water possible.

I can honestly say that my family is sold on our Berkey®. We have a constant source of pure clean water to drink and cook with. It is very easy to use and clean. We have contracted with someone to set up our online shopping cart, but until then, there is not a lot of details on our store page. If you would like more information on sizes and pricing of any of the items, please let us know.

Marci,
Thanks for the information. I was just looking into these a few months ago when all the pharmacudial junk came out about it being in the water. I kind of forgot about it, but I will be putting one of these into our summertime budget. When I order, I will order from you!
By the way, could your next product review be on your food dehydrator? I am also in the market for this item and I will have to purchase it soon to help out with storing our garden production.
grace and peace,
julie

I love mine! I just ordered it from Marci last week, got it yesterday, and have already filtered 12 gallons of water for my rotated storage jugs. :-D I just posted on my blog about it.
