Tonight for supper we are having hot cheesy potato soup and crackers. We have a friend who insists that soup (especially meatless soup) is NOT a meal. He feels it is only a side dish. This friend is coming to visit and I keep telling him that we are having meatless soup each night they are here. So far I have come up with potato, tomato, and split pea w/out ham. =) I will serve them meat while they are here, but don't tell them.
Anyway, here is the poll. Again, please respond in the comments section. Is hot cheesy potato soup and crackers a good supper, or is soup (especially meatless soup) a side dish. Let's hear from all of you!!
**After reading BellaMama's comments, I feel I must add this. We do eat meat. We raise our own meats and have lots of it. This soup as a meal has been a running joke between me and our friend. We stayed with them once and I took my turns cooking. Every once in awhile, I would make soup or chili. He would always make a comment. Then if I made one without meat, there were big comments... all done in fun and love. We will most certainly be serving them meat and good meals while they are here. This is just a fun poll, that I am going to show him. =)

Its a meal in our house, and I suspect that in many a home across the world soup is a meal. It sure is in Viet Nam for breakfast and it is a meal in Tibet, Stews are a common meal in parts of Europe. I suspect if it was just a side dish, there are many times in the winter, we don't have a meal. Does that mean I skipped a meal last night ? Sounds like a diet to me : )
If it's something your family does, then no one can complain - even as guests in your house. As long as you're not intentionally making something that you know they don't like. We often have not only meatless soup as a meal but meatless dishes. We are not vegetarian, we love meat, we have meat, but found that having more vegetables and beans helps us nutritionaly more than what we used to eat.
You already know that eating less meat and/or cutting it with beans, when appropriate, is more economical especially when feeding alot of people.
I try to make some sort of bread to go with the soup/stew and if not then a good dessert of the coffecake type.
Hope you have a good visit and pleasant meal times with them!!

**I think of you on Thursdays and am learning to be thankful everyday!!
Yes. A meatless soup is a meal. A baked potato is a meal. A piece of toast is a meal. A bowl of ice cream is a meal. If it is food and you eat it, it is a meal. But, then again, he has heard it from me before... ;-)
If you eat a bowl-full it's a meal--if you eat a cup-full, it's a side.
We serve ours with bread though usually.
And I'm with Ginny--a baked potato is one of my fav meals!
Hey,even a bowl of cereal can be a meal! LOL
I'm glad you clarified that. ;-) I also see that you will be serving them "meat AND good meals". LOL!
That would be a meal at our house! Sounds delicious!

It's a meal in our house - in fact, it's an often requested meal by the girls. :)
Oh gosh, absolutely it's a meal! Especially wiht a nice big salad. Yum! My DH used to think that every meal had to have meat. But he's changing. He still wants eggs or cheese, but we do eat less meat than we used to.
One of my favorite meals, especially with homemade bread!
Good Morning =),
We have the same joke with this friend! =D Yes, it IS a meal. Especially with fresh-baked bread. Here's another one for your menu: corn chowder. Gary really likes soup in the winter; we had ham and bean soup last night. Perfect for a snowy evening ~ and boy have we had SNOW lately. It is snowing again now. Love ya! Have a good day. =)
Would definitely be a meal in our house! :D
With or without meat it would be a meal for myself and my children, however, my darling doesn't like soup at all-meal or side. He would rather not eat a sandwich either.
In our house, because my dh works second shift, we eat our "bigger" meal for lunch and then soup (with or without meat) or sandwich for dinner when it's just the kiddies and I.
It's a meal in my book, but we usually have a sandwich with soup. With tomato soup, it's a grilled cheese. With vegetable soup, it's a peanut butter sandwich. And with chili, it's a plain cheese sandwich. With bean soup, it's always cornbread. But I can't think of any sandwich that I would like to have with potato soup. It stands alone!
Ok. YES! Soup is a meal. Of course it's a meal.
Tonight we are having crab bisque for our meal. No salad, no sandwich, just crab bisque.
The boys will have chicken noodle.
I have a question........is it a meal if you feed your boys chocolate chocolate chip cookies for lunch? Butter, sugar, wheat, chocolate chips, cocoa, walnuts. Lots of good things there!

Dana,
That's a meal in my book!!!! :-D
I grew up having potato soup as a meal and still think any soup can make a meal. Look how many restaurants serve soup and salad as a meal!
The comment about having potato soup is mine, I forgot to put my name :) Lisa in NM
Of course soup is a meal, you know mmm mmm good and all, coming from a true "Campbell" soup lover. (smile)
Like Sharri, a cup is a side (ask any restaurant) and a bowl is a meal in our home. We especially like butternut squash soup another meatless soup.
