Would You Be Offended?

I can't help myself, but I LOVE this doormat. Would you find the mat offensive if you came to visit me? I want to hear from everyone on both sides. You won't offend me.

Well Done Thou Good And Faithful Servant

The above pictures show you what it looks like outside right now. It is an overcast day and the temperature is right now at 34 degrees. After all the frigid temperatures we have had, that feels amost spring like to us. On Thursday it says it might actually get in the 50's with a thunderstorm. If that happens, then almost all of the snow will be gone. I am anxious to see what my daffodils and other spring bulb plants will be doing. They started coming up in January because it was warm for so long. Then we got that long hard freeze. While I was out there taking these pictures, I heard a noise. It was geese flying. I zoomed as far as my camera would zoom in. You see their picture below. I was trying to figure out what they were doing. They are flying north. I tried to tell them that spring is really on its way and that they could turn around and head south. They did not listen to me. I wonder if they know something that I don't!!!! =0

I have been doing a lot of reflecting for the last several days. There were 3 deaths around me this last week. I did not know 2 of them, but they were known by others in my family. An 18 year old boy was accidentally shot by a friend and he died. He was friends with 2 of my nephews. Then my brother had a friend whose wife is in the very last stages of cancer. It is all through her body. They have a 16 year old daughter. Last week, the Dad was killed in a car accident. Now that precious girl knows that she will lose her Mom soon as well. Then last week, a precious 16 year old girl (I had met her and her family one time. They were friends of my friends) was hit and killed on her way to work. We are NOT promised another breath are we? Will the Master find us busy doing what He gave us to do, when our turn comes? In 2 of these deaths, they were young people. Young people have their whole life before them, or so we think. The other situation had all the marks of the other parent dying first and the Dad staying around to finish raising their daughter. Things are not always what they seem. The Lord gave each of us gifts and talents to use for HIM. Not for us, but to bring glory to His name. Are you using yours? Are you spending time with the Savior every day? Are you running your home or your business in a way that brings the Lord glory? Or is your life about you and what you want to do, or what you like to do? It really makes me think.

I had posted awhile back about the movie, "Facing The Giants". We got a copy of that church's first movie, "Flywheel". Again, I HIGHLY recommend that you watch that movie. It is another example of how God will bless us for doing what He told us to do and doing it right even swearing to personal hurt or loss. Time is short my friends. Let's be sure we are found faithful when He comes for us. We are the only "Jesus" or "Bible" that some people will ever see or read.

Positional Authority Vs. Personal Authority

Hello there!!! It is in the mid 30's right now. Some of the snow is melting and there are patches of grass showing through. The wind is blowing a bit today. It is blowing a branch or something against the back of the house by the office. I thought I had a mouse in the wall. =)

We watched a video yesterday that was about Authority. It gave a very clear and precise picture of the right authority and the wrong authority. God set up a chain of command for us. He gave us all authorities to be under. When we keep under our proper authority there are protections that He affords us. God always works through His principles. We just need to figure out what they are. =) This man (I believe his name was Joe Norvell) asked a series of questions to start off this picture.

Key Questions
1. Who named Adam? - God did
2. Who named Eve? - Adam did
3. Who named their children? - Eve/Parents did

In the Chain of Authority
1. Whose authority was Adam to be under? - God's
2. Whose authority was Eve to be under? - Adam's
3. Whose authority were the children to be under? - Parent's

In the Chain of Responsibility
1. Whose authority was Adam to bring Eve under? - God's
2. Whose authority was Eve to bring the children under? - Adam's
3. Whose authority was the firstborn to bring the younger siblings under? - Parent's

Here are some distinctions to the 2 types of Authority.
Personal Authority - You are trying to bring others into submission to you, your personal agenda, desires and ideals.

Positional Authority - You are trying to bring others into submission to those over you, ultimately God, specifically to your initial authority.

He talked about how many woman see a godly family or they have an ideal in their head, and they try to bring their children under that, instead of under their father's authority. It causes lots of problems (many of which I personally can attest to). We refuse to trust God to work through our authority. Here are some outcomes...

Positional Authority
Responding to situations
Having a spirit of meekness
Having the trust of the one over you and having communication with them that brings peace.
Having strength for serving the Lord
Being an extension of your authority
Having an increased influence with your authority - In Proverbs it says the heart of her husband doth safely trust in her.

Personal Authority
Reacting to situations
Spirit of anger from desire to control
Presumption instead of trust - you start assuming things which leads to conflict.
Having weakness - you are always struggling with trying to get everyone to do it your way. You need lots of time off and you burn out easily.
You cut yourself off from your authority. It leaves you no back up.
You have a decreased influence with your authority because they can't trust you to do what you are supposed to do.

This was just such an eye opening picture for me. I see it in my own family and many of those families around me. I will talk about the wife's part in this. We as woman are not an extension of our husband's authority. Just like the submission post I made, we correct our husband or sometimes even overrule him. Then we wonder why things are not working in our home. As the man started listing the outcomes in the Personal Authority column, my husband and I kept looking at each other and smiling. Then I finally blurted out.... "OK, so I am a poster child for that column!!!" =) I didn't fit all of them, but enough to recognize myself.

God has been showing us so many things recently. Maybe because we have been looking for them like never before... However, as we keep learning these principles of God, and put them into action, we are seeing results. Not results we bring about, but things that God is doing in and around us. It is a very exciting time in our household. I just wish we did not start all of this so late in our marriage. I am really trying to help the younger women and the older girls to learn some of these before they are ruing wasted time like I am. May the Lord continue to grow us!!!

How Humble Are You?

I was reading this list that someone made...

Personal Evaluation: How Humble Are You?

When people disagree with you, do you argue to defend your position?
Are you hurt when those whom you dislike are honored?
Do you find it difficult to admit you are wrong?
Do you inwardly react to criticism?
Do you give your opinions before being asked for them?
Do you enjoy sharing about your accomplishments?
Do you talk more than you listen?
Are you more concerned about your reputation or God’s?
Do you seek ways to humble yourself?
Do you do things for praise and compliments?
Do you accept praise rather than deflecting it?
Are you quick to correct others when they make mistakes?
Do you react when you do not receive credit you are due?
Do you compare yourself with others rather than God?

It really makes me stop and think. I am chewing on a verse this week. It talks about our need to repent. Many people think that if they do something bad, ask forgiveness and move on that they have repented. Some people do the same thing over and over and over and over again. It is suppose to be OK, because they ask forgiveness. To repent means that if you are walking north, then you turn around and head south. It is to turn around and walk directly opposite from where you have been going. I realize that there are things that we all struggle with. However, did God instruct us to do something that He did not equip us for? Sometimes it is just a matter of us making RIGHT choices.

We often see things in other people's lives quicker than we see them in ourselves. I have heard it said that something that bothers you in others is often something that you are guilty of in your own life. One of the things that God instructs us as wives to do is:
Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so [let] the wives [be] to their own husbands in every thing. Eph. 5:22-24

Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord. Col. 3:18

We are also told to honor our husbands and to respect them. I have a friend who truly exemplifies "Mrs. Goodwife". Yet, I hear little things from other women in both good and not so good marriages that perk up my ears. With what I have been studying, instead of looking at those women, I am looking at myself to see if I am guilty of the same thing. I am ashamed to admit, I am. I hear a child ask, "Daddy, can I go outside?" Before the Dad can open his mouth, the Mom says, "No, it's too muddy." Let's say we are visiting somewhere and there is good conversation going on. I might say, "Come on Michael, it's time to go home." Or someone's husband tells someone, "Sure, we would love to go with you." Then you hear the wife counter that with "I'm not going there." These are not said in ugly tones even. These are not submitting, honoring or respecting our husbands. They are placing us in authority over him. There are other ways to say these things. Like if I am ready to go, to simply ask Michael if we could go home soon. Although many times, especially with me, I need to just keep my mouth shut. I guess I always thought that to err in this area would be something like talking bad about my husband to someone, even in the guise of a prayer request. Or coming right out in a snotty tone and telling him that I would NOT do whatever it was he told me to. However, I think it goes beyond this. A wise older woman once told me that to honor and respect my husband was a command from Almighty God, not a feeling I needed to conjure up. I know in years past, I have truly torn my wonderful man down with my tongue. God has done some real whuppin' on me and is working that out of me. No, I need to learn to humble myself, put my husband before me and let him KNOW, not just think, that he is king. May the Lord continue to teach me and grow me in this area. My I truly repent and walk in the opposite direction.

That Brown and Wretched Creature

Well if you noticed in the comments on the story of the murder of my snowman, a mysterious person named "Wong" made a comment that ended with a sinister laugh. Wong, is well known by some of you. She claims to be a city gal, but they raised and BUTCHERED their own pig, they have laying hens, have raised broilers, have goats and a beef calf. Yesterday, they butchered their over abundance of roosters. Does this sound like a city slicker to you? She tries to hide behind that moniker, but those of us around her, know better. Anyway, about 2 years ago, she actually hatched the idea of bringing the brown mongrel to our neighborhood. It was supposed to be a wonderful thing. As we well know, even if dead snowmen tell no tales, it is NOT a wonderful thing. I have been trying to get a picture of the mangy critter, since it comes over almost every day, but when ever it sees me it runs home... Yes, I know where it lives... at WONG's HOUSE!!!! I went back through my files looking for its picture and found one from last spring. The legs in the picture belong to the elusive Wong!

Keep Short Accounts

This morning, a local Christian family lost a precious child. Their just turned 16 year old daughter was in an auto accident that took her life. We never know when it will be our turn. It does not matter if you are young or if you are old. We all have an appointment with death. Make sure you keep short accounts with the Lord. Do you know for sure that if you died right now, that you would go to heaven? You can know that. If you are not sure and would like to be sure, you can email me and I will show you from the Bible. Once your life ends it is too late. Also, make sure that you will not have regrets if someone else dies. After they are gone is too late to make things right and get things settled. Make sure that if something happens to you, that no one else will have regrets. Reach out in love to those who may have a wall between you and them. Live each day as if it is your last, because you never know when your last day is.

Pray for the Yoder family as they mourn the loss of their daughter.

Cold Blooded Murder

We have a cold blooded, calculating murderer in our area. It is known to strike terror in the hearts of all snowmen. Last month this brown terror struck on our farm. It beheaded my snowman. Some sweet neighbor children came and buried all the bad memories of the first snowman and built me an even bigger and better snowman. He had a beautiful orange carrot nose, two slender brown arms, a scarf and later a hat was added.

That stalking murderer tortured this snowman slowly, killing him over time. First he pulled out that beautiful orange carrot nose. Then he pulled his arms off. The snowman still stood there bravely in the face of these brutal attacks. Then one of the neighbors found evidence that the cruel brown creature was at work again. The snowman's Florida hat was found at the foot of their stairs. Well today, that murderer attacked our snowman with a vengance and knocked him clean over. As you can see below he is dead, done for, obliterated. I will try and get you a picture of the mangy creature that wreaks such havoc on innocent snowmen. Good bye dear snowman. I sure enjoyed you while you were here!!!

Snow Sun Shower

In Florida, we used to get what we called sun showers. It would be raining while the sun was brightly shining. In the last 2 days, we have gotten another 3" of snow. Today it snows hard and then quits and the sun comes out. Then it starts snowing hard and then it quits and the sun comes out. We looked outside a little while ago and the sun was shining brightly and it was snowing. So, we had a snow sun shower!! =) If you click on the pictures you will see the full size version. You can see the snowflakes much better in the bigger pictures.

Legless Sheep

I keep watching to get a picture of my sheep out in the snow. They are really sticking close to their shelter (not that I blame them). We had a big snowfall back in 2003. The sheep would come out and it looked like they did not have any legs. The picture below is from 2003. I guess the big difference with this years snow is the extremely low temperatures we are having. The sheep would go out and play in the snow then. The cows have been going out, but they are about the only animals that are.

It is snowing again today by the way. They said to expect 1 to 3 inches. =)

Are You Real?

Are you really “YOU” no matter who is around? Do you get nervous around some people and try to be someone you are not? Do you pretend you have it all together and never let your “warts” show? Are you impressed with a certain way of life and do everything in your power to be like that? Have you forgotten where you came from or even how God made you?

It seems that people have forgotten how to be real. There are many different categories that this manifests itself in. Some people put on their “holy” cloak. They appear to have it all together. They always let you know how to overcome your weaknesses. They are always the teacher, never to be taught. The bad things that happen in your life would never happen in their life and if they did, it would be because of someone or something outside their control. I heard someone once say that you will know what you are made of spiritually when you are squeezed. They likened us to sponges. Whatever is in the sponge is what comes out when it is squeezed. You can pretend that you are a sponge full of the finest wine, but when you get squeezed and plain old water comes out, the proof is there for all to see. I have seen these people go through a tight spot. What comes out is not pretty and is usually aimed at someone else. Then they go back to pretending. I wonder if they think I am terribly dense and do not remember those squeezing times, or if they truly view themselves as they pretend.

Other people like to put on “rich” airs. They have to dress a certain way, drive certain vehicles, eat at certain restaurants, etc. These people are your friends or family. You see how they live. You know what kind of job they have. You have heard them talk about where are they going to come up with the house payment this month. My heart aches for people like this. Every body sees and knows the truth and they just make themselves miserable. It is almost like a druggie’s “fix” for them when they get to buy some new item, especially a big item.

I think one that I fall into is trying to be someone that I admire or like. I was born in Kentucky, but did not live there long enough to acquire an accent. In fact, I was only 1 ½ when we moved to Chicago. We lived in Florida for 12 years while raising Joshua. There were so many quaint sayings down there from people who were truly Southern and not just transplants. Joshua picked up more of these than we did. However, some of them I TRIED hard to incorporate into my vocabulary to sound more local. WHY?? Everyone knew where I was from and how long I had been there. Did I really think I was fooling them? When I see this in others I wonder if they forgot where they came from and do they realize that others have not forgotten where they come from or who they are. I was lived in the Chicago area for 7 years and then was raised in Ohio. That is what I most sound like, as it should be.

I just wish people would be who they really are… warts and all. We can all change and grow in Christ. However, when we try and be someone we are not, then we are being dishonest. People can’t rest and totally trust in us. We have people in our life that would not tell you if they were upset with you. Instead of being totally at ease around them, we are always trying to read their looks or tones, etc. Be yourself! Be real! If you wonder if you have problems in this area, ask your family or friends if they see it in you. Be prepared for honesty however. I will now step down off my soap box!!! =)

The Big Snow

As you can tell from the pictures above, we got lots of snow. We think it is somewhere around 7" although we are hearing higher amounts. There are also a couple inches of ice in there. The snowman in the second picture is a Florida Gator fan as you can tell. That is for our Florida friends who read this blog. My son put the hat on the snowman again today. It was so funny to watch the dogs walk on the snow. They would walk on the top of it because of the ice. However, every few steps one of their legs would fall through. It was like a drunken gait as they wandered around checking everything out. The bucket in the fourth picture is a 5 gallon bucket. The basket in the top picture is a bushel basket. We have had snow fall off and on through out the day, but it really did not add any accumulation to speak of. I love to look out and see the snow all pristine and white. I especially love it when it has not yet been marred by feet.

Well, I just wanted to share our snow pictures with you. Did any of you get a big snow or ice from this storm? I really love snow and I have thanked God for sending what He did.

Maple Syrup Demonstration

Yesterday was the God's World class for February. We had friends of ours come and tell the children about tapping maple trees and collecting sap for syrup. Their family does this every year and sell between 100 and 200 gallons a year. They have a blog as well... Yoder Farm. The top picture is Paul explaining something to the children. He drilled into a piece of our firewood to show them how he drills the holes. He put in a spile and showed them how he connects tubing to flow into a bucket. He also passed around some maple syrup for them to try. There were lots of questions and I think everyone (me included) learned a lot.

During the year, each of the children have to demonstrate something to the other children. It teaches them to organize their thoughts, speak in front of others and to show someone how to do something. Some of the parents really try to help, but I discourage this. There is no right or wrong way to do it. It just lets them practice these skills. The boy in the first picture is showing how to make a gift bag. He gave each family instructions to take home. You would never have to buy another gift bag. He did a great job. The last picture above is another boy that showed how to rope something. He explained it very clearly... How to hold the rope, what to do with your arm and hand... and he was able to rope a 5 gallon bucket almost every time. I told him that he forgot his cowboy hat and boots. I also told him the next time my cow gets out that I am calling him!!! =)

These pictures show what is going on weather wise at our farm today. We are supposed to get between 4 and 12 inches (depending on who you listen to). We are grateful for all that we get. In the meadow...

Skatin' On The Pond!!!

As you can see our pond is frozen. There is a shortage of skates, but they are all having fun out on the pond. The little children cleared the snow off yesterday. The big kids were over tonight to try it out. As you can see they were having fun even with the spills.

I looked out and saw this sky out back looked lavender. I had never seen it that color. The top picture here is the one I took. It does not do the color justice. Then I walked out front and took the other picture. What a contrast.

Never A Dull Moment

When I made the title, "Never A Dull Moment", I can actually mean that in 2 ways. One way is the brilliant sun shining on the 3" of snow we got last night. It made everything look fresh and new again and is very powdery. If you click on the pictures above and look at the larger version, you can see the snow sparkling like it is covered in diamonds. It is not dull at all, but very bright and sparkly.

The other way I can use the title is an incident that happened late this afternoon. I am fighting getting some sort of chest cold or something. I have been doing really good about taking my vitamins and herbs and keeping warm, etc. I walked back into the office, minding my own business. I happened to catch something out of the corner of my eye... something VERY LARGE that went by my window out back. I stopped, looked up and what to my wondering eyes should appear? Buttercup, my jersey cow checking out the garden area out back. Our fence is not working really well and she has gotten out 2 times here in the last week. Both of those times though, Michael was home. The other bad thing about it, is that she got her halter off the other day and we have not put it back on yet. I could go out and walk right up to her, but she knows that I have no power to lead her. Just then, (A God thing), my friend pulled up with some of her children. They had come to borrow my tortilla maker. The oldest daughter, the wonderful and daring Rachel, jumped out of the van and started for Buttercup. She herded her toward the barn. I told her not to worry, as I had made a quick call to my husband and he said to just leave her and watch her. He would be home in an hour to put her back. She, being the wonderful young lady that she is, kept at her task. Her younger brother jumped out to keep Molasses in while she tried to herd Buttercup over the fence. No luck. Then her other sister jumps out and joins in the chase. My friend pulls her van to block the driveway and jumps out as well. One of them, I won't embarass them by saying who, took a dive onto their stomach trying to get that ornery cow. Praise the Lord, they got her in and I reminded them of the crowns in heaven they just earned. I feel blessed, but often too helpless. Thank you, Rachel, Obadiah, Anna and Jean!!!!

Cold & Snowy

Over the past several days, the lows at night have been around -4 without the windchill added in. It has been COLD!! I think to the woman of yesteryear. Many of them living out on the prairie. Shut in small cabins with everyone. No car to hop into or no place to really go in those cold temperatures. I can see where you would have to plan so that cabin fever would not get out of hand. They spent time as families doing inside chores. I am sure there was sewing, spinning, mending, candle making and many other chores. The men would have to go out to care for the stock. They could sit inside and mend and polish their harnesses.

My house has stayed fairly chilly. It was not meant to go through temperatures this low for an extended time. We have one frozen drain in the house. The water in 2 of the barns does not work. It has created a lot of extra chores. Hauling water to cows is no small deal. Then to top that off, we have been fighting a nasty cold. Michael's is much worse than mine, but so far his has stayed in his head. He does not do well when they move down into his chest. Mine has been very minor and has mostly been in my chest. However, there are still chores that have to be done, including hauling water to cows. The calves get a 5 gallon bucket in the evening and in the morning, the neighbor boy tops off the bucket. Yesterday, my dear sweet husband hauled 30 gallons of water to the cows and today another 40 gallons. We are hoping the water in the barn comes back on soon. =)

Even with all that though, we have it so much more easy than those pioneers did. They were hardy stock. Many of them died and many of them lost children due to the extremes they endured. I need to not whine about what needs to be done and praise the Lord for all the conveniences that are mine. We are glad about the big freeze though. We needed a good one to kill off the bugs and other yuck that did not get killed last year.

It is snowing again today. We are supposed to get up to 2 inches more. If you look in the bottom picture, you can just barely make out a bright red cardinal sitting in the tree.

Sister Bloggers Need Prayers & Support

One of our Sisters in the Lord was just diagnosed with non-hodgkins lymphoma. They don't have any friends or family in the area. They live in Osage, IA. I don't know if any of you are near there and could help them out or not. Please be in prayer for Patti. Visit her blog and let her know you are praying. Over The Garden Gate

Also, keep praying for the Fuller Family. Brian Fuller was diagnosed with cancer and has been in the battle for awhile. Christina, his wife, and his family are trying to keep things going on their Kansas dairy farm. Visit their blog and let them know you are still praying as well. Kansas Milkmaid

A Must See

Facing the Giants is a movie that was made by a church in Georgia. Most people hear that a movie is made by a church and they automatically assume, it is second rate. This movie was out in the theatres. Everyone we knew who saw the movie, went on and on about how good it was. It did not show anywhere really close to us, so we waited for it to come out on DVD, which it did at the end of January.

My husband and I watched it last night. I am NOT a football fan in any way, shape or form. I despise it. This was a movie centered around football. I LOVED this movie. Oh, the message in it is so strong and so right on. It is a message not just for playing football, but for all of life. We are to do all that we do as unto the Lord. We should do it to the best of our ability. However, the key is to leave the results to God. Praise Him if you win, and praise Him if you lose. Just walk away knowing you did your very best for Him. My husband and I cried through much of this movie. It seemed tailor made for us in many ways. We have tried to get pregnant for almost 28 years. We are in need of a truck and a better car. Our cars we have break down often. There are many things around our house that need done. All of these things were in this movie. When the movie was over, we both got on our knees and had a good long talk with God. We are going to praise Him if the car starts, or if it need some help. We are going to praise Him in our house with all the problems. We are going to praise Him that our barns need help. We are going to do our very best and leave any results up to Him. If we are able to get another car or a truck we will praise Him. If we have to keep borrowing our friend's trucks, we will praise Him. We will know that we are doing our very best for our Lord and that will be all that matters to us. We want to be found faithful!!!!!

The weather is VERY cold here. For the next several days we will have wind chills below zero. Hope ya'll stay warm!
